Round-trip destination: Home.
When Abbie Rumery left her hometown of Gobles, Michigan for the University of Arizona, she made what she thought would be a permanent trade: Southwest Michigan for Southwest USA. Abbie earned her degree in Family Studies and Human Development before moving to Los Angeles, where she lived and worked for over a decade. It wasn’t until Abbie married her husband, James, and found she was pregnant with their first child that she decided it was time to ask for “take-backs” on Southwest Michigan. So Abbie packed up her little family and headed back to her first home, excited for another chance at life in the Mitten.
While it may seem like a lot of moving around and adventuring, Abbie hasn’t minded the journey one bit. In fact, she loves little more than having the chance to explore. Abbie is a naturally adventurous spirit who’s climbed more than a few mountains and hiked many historic trails over the years—in fact, Abbie and James were married on a sailboat off the coast of Italy following a 105-mile, 10-day trek known as the Tour du Mont Blanc. Abbie’s senses of flexibility and adventure serve her especially well in her role with Southwest Michigan First’s Development team, where she spends her time forging new relationships and seeking fresh opportunities with local companies, Council members and partners.
Now that she’s landed back in Southwest Michigan, Abbie loves the renewed sense of wonder she’s found in the place where she grew up. Having left the area for so many years, Abbie now feels like she’s able to rediscover everything along with her family—from hiking trails to big family barbecues and houses with yards, Abbie is just happy to be home.
