Russ Kavalhuna, J.D., has been appointed the 10th president of Western Michigan University, effective July 1, 2025. A WMU alumnus, he brings a strong background in aviation, law, and education, including a seven-year tenure as president of Henry Ford College. Known for fostering partnerships and expanding student access, Kavalhuna is a mission-driven leader committed to student success. He previously served as executive director of flight operations at WMU’s College of Aviation. A former commercial airline captain and federal prosecutor, he is also active in shaping state and national education policy. He succeeds Dr. Edward Montgomery and steps into the role as WMU earns national recognition as a top college for future leaders. Kavalhuna holds a Juris Doctor from Cooley Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Science from Western Michigan University.
