1905 building transformed into new bank opens in downtown Kalamazoo

A 120-year-old building has reopened for business in downtown Kalamazoo after an investment of more than $1 million that transformed it into a modern bank.

Horizon Bank opened a new professional office on Monday, Aug. 11, in the Monroe Building at 151 E. Michigan Ave.

Built in 1905, the Monroe Building was originally home to the Kalamazoo City Savings Bank. It features a neoclassical exterior with 13,000 square feet of private offices, conference rooms, collaborative space and a kitchen spread throughout two floors and a full basement.
“We are honored to be locating our downtown Kalamazoo bank office in this 120-year-old historic bank building,” Horizon Bank Market President John M. Crandle said.

“We’re excited to welcome the Kalamazoo community into our new branch,” said Branch Manager Mike Thomas. “Whether you’re managing a business or looking for personal financial guidance, our team is here to provide the tools, support and solutions to help you succeed.”

Unlike a traditional branch, this location is designed to deliver both personal and commercial banking services with a more modern approach.
There are also private spaces for consultations and financial planning. Treystar is the landlord of the space.
Horizon Bank hopes to be a long-term neighbor and partner in the downtown community’s continued resurgence, company officials said.

“We are bullish on downtown Kalamazoo, especially with the new event center under construction and planned changes to the traffic pattern,” Crandle said.

The company has another location at 3250 W. Centre Ave., in Portage.
Horizon Bank was founded in 1873 in Michigan City, Indiana. The company expanded into Michigan beginning in 2003. It has 81 locations in Michigan and Indiana.
