WMU students gain career advantage through new on-campus thrift store initiative

Western Michigan University (WMU) is empowering students to take the first steps in their professional careers, starting with wardrobe.
“Western Outfitters,” located in Kohrman Hall, is an on-campus thrift store that’s available to all students for professional needs.
Offered through WMU’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Western Outfitters allows students to shop for high-quality professional clothing, accessories, shoes, and more.
“You never can get a second chance to make a great first impression, so, we knew how important this was. The problem is that a first impression is incredibly expensive,” Department Chair Dr. Adam Manley said. “We’re trying to give off that first impression for them, but that also doesn’t break the bank.”
WMU professors, staff, administrators, spouses and community members helped stock the store for its grand opening, providing over 700 items for Western Outfitters’ inventory.
“I’ve always loved fashion, but I just know that teacher clothing is not the same as everyday clothing,” Amaryn Balderas said.
Balderas, a freshman at WMU majoring in Elementary Education, works as a student “retail intern” in the store.
Interns will be able to list their involvement as professional experience on future resumes. Additionally, fashion merchandising and design students assist with alterations for the clothes.
In order to utilize Western Outfitters, students must:
- Provide proof for a professional need, including a syllabus or interview notice
- Provide their student I.D.
- Borrow no more than two items per academic year
Students can donate or return borrowed items to get up to two extra items.
“It’s a very welcoming and cozy spot where you don’t need to feel judged or ashamed that you can’t go out and get something right at hand. It just, it’s a very nice spot to be. I love it,” Balderas said.
Western Outfitters is located on the second floor of North Kohrman Hall in the former art gallery. For operating hours, visit their website.
