Creativity is “sprout”ing up all around her.
America Edwards successfully balances her tightrope act tiptoeing between her dual roles as a full-time student and member of Southwest Michigan First’s Creative Team. A graduate of Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, America is a proud Kalamazoo Promise Scholarship recipient. When considering schools, Western Michigan University (WMU) was a natural choice as she was committed to maintaining her relationship with her younger sister and parents, both professors at WMU.
Majoring in Communication Studies while pursuing a minor in Social Psychology, America is putting her studies into practice promoting the region on the organization’s social media and digital platforms. She consistently looks for ways to improve her work drawing on skills she picks up as a research assistant in WMU’s Communication and Social Robotics Labs; America finds how people respond to her social media posts as equally interesting as how humans respond to robots.
America finds her dog Sprout to be the perfect complement to her hectic schedule. Having found America when she visited the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, the Chihuahua and Pug mix contently naps while America studies. Not one to be overlooked, Sprout makes herself known with an occasional snore or tap of the paw when looking for some attention.
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
