 John W. Brown Chairman, Stryker Corp.
John W. Brown started his career as an engineer for aluminum manufacturer Ormet Corp. before joining Thiokol Chemical Corp. where he dealt with rocket propellants. In 1965, he was employed at Squibb Corp. in various management positions, including being assistant to the president.
Brown was promoted to president of Edward Weck & Co., a subsidiary of Squibb Corp. in 1972. After 5 years he then joined Stryker Corp. as president and CEO, and was appointed as chairman of the board in 1980.
The executive is director of Lunar Corp. Madison, Wis.; National City Corp., Cleveland, Ohio; and Arthur D. Little, Inc., Cambridge, Mass. He is also a director of the American Business Conference, a coalition of chief executive officers of mid-size, high-growth companies; Health Industry Manufacturers Association (HIMA), Washington D.C.; and a member of the board of trustees of the Food and Drug Law Institute, Washington D.C.
Born in Paris, Tenn., Brown received a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University. He is married and has two grown daughters.
